Things happen in front of you.
That's perhaps the most wonderful and mysterious aspect of photography.
It seemed like you just had to decide when and where to aim the camera.
The process was linear and it never stopped.
That's still true,
although i've traded in my need for always taking pictures.
I can let them go by sometimes now
and just be there?

featuring isabelle pateer
featuring' is a way of exposing the work and thoughts of a contemporary photographer
mostly it's a summary of a communication (live chat, email, phonecall...) through which i tried to find answers on questions or to let the artist explain the idea behind an image
isabelle pateer (°1980) graduated in 2003 from saint lucas brussels, dpt. of photography
specialised in documentary imagery and location portraiture she is shooting an equal balance of personal long-term projects and editorial assignments for magazines, companies and organizations
i've asked isabelle to write some words on her recent work 'unsettled'
this series is exposed now in 'galerie mercator' in antwerp

the documentary series ‘unsettled’ focuses in a metaphoric way on the idea of ‘progress’
in a case where living environment has to disappear
because of industrial purposes
within this ongoing project this international case is illustrated
by focusing on the belgian village doel,
which is threatened by vast expansions of the port of antwerp
”unsettled” alternates portraits of young inhabitants with landscapes
that bare witness to the dejected state of the town
it rises the question of the purposefulness of growth, development and progression

i find dieter de lathauwer's imagery quite unique in the belgian photographyscene
born in '78, he graduated as an industrial engineer in 2000 after which he studied photography at the academy of fine arts in gent
he lives and works in gent - belgium
while observing dieter's intriguing landscapes, words like transparency and endlessness, solitude and desolateness, sublimed reality and surreality come to my mind
one thing is for sure, and this makes his portfolio that outstanding:
de lathauwer speaks a language of his own which he finds difficult
to explain himself but that no one amongst us can leave untouched
i asked the man to write something down about one of his images...

A tension between registration and storytelling.
Under the skin uneasy feelings.
Surreal, slightly.
Watching.

A strange world suddenly exposing itself to you.

This image is taken in Gran Canaria. Not that it matters. With a medium format film camera.
Is it real, fake, a miniature world? What's going on? Enter my world, please, enter.

My parents are ok. We talk fine, we go on. We don't fight too much.
My dad was in the airforce. That was where I've got it from.
I wanna move around, live in different places.
I'm not in love.
It didn't happened yet.
I'm not sure we have a social mission. Anyway... we don't have to.

My name is Hannah.
I'm sixteen.
I live in St. Peters, Broadstairs.
I want to go to university to do sciences.
For the moment I'm studying textile and drama.
I have a good relation with my parents. We don't argue much. We get on very well.
My dad is very inspiring towards me.
I want to visit as many places as I can, go and explore the world, but in the end I would rather live here in this region where I grew up.
I'm outgoing, I love my friends, I'm hopefull for my future.

I'm 23. I live in Dover but I'm from Margate originally.
I want to join the police. I'm just waiting to hear back from that.
I've been in the army for six years. I'm out now ... the police, that's all I want to do.
I have a good relationship with my parents. Especially with my mom.
My parents are inspiring, they've always pushed me to go down the road I've gone. They've encouraged me a lot.
In the years to come I want to open my horizon.
I have a girlfriend. We are happy.
I'm motivated and charismatic.

featuring bill bowden
'featuring' is a way of exposing the work and thoughts of a contemporary photographer
mostly it's a summary of a communication through which i tried to find answers on questions or to let the artist explain the idea behind an image
i follow bill bowden's photography for quite a time now
his images are invitations to observe closely, to let apparent details coincide, to penetrate multiple layers...

as a first 'featuring' i found bill's work, specifically the image:'pool' the photographical translation of what i meant by naming this blog 'separate stories'

On Monday, I drove through the town where I grew up, Marianna, Arkansas. A doctor lived across the street from us. When I was a child, she had a swimming pool in the back yard. I remember hearing that she had filled the pool in with dirt after finding a dead horse floating in it one day. Where the horse came from, I don't know. But a lot of people used to have horses in that town. Apparently, the doctor's children had grown up and moved away, and the pool had fallen into disrepair. So, when she found the horse in it, she figured it was time to fill it in. I assume the horse was trying to get a drink of water and fell in, but who knows? That was several years ago.
Anyway, I drove through Marianna on Monday for the first time in a couple of years and noticed the pool area looking very serene, so I took this photo. The man who owns the house now told me he's thinking about digging it out and restoring it for use as a swimming pool. The town itself appears to be dying. It's in a part of the south known as the Delta, which was very prosperous 100 years ago because of cotton farming. Now, the area is very depressed financially.
I was attracted to the symmetry and the serenity of this scene, but for me there was also a childhood memory attached to it. If you look hard, perhaps you can see it, too.

I admire the work of Bill Bowden. In his photography he's permanently 'at war with the oblivious' (the name of his blog). This war has yet resulted in some very inspiring images. Pictures that balance between thoughts and reality, between impressions and registrations, imagination and truth.
